1. What inspired your passion for cosmetology?
I love being able to transform hair and faces into anything....from frankenstein to a supermodel...its all so fun!
2. What school did you go to for cosmetology?
I went to Honolulu Community College.
3. What actions did you take to get to where you are now?
To get where I am I had to go threough a lot. I gave up my volleyball scholarship at HPU, went to the mainland, and still didn't like going to traditional college. Then, finally went to hcc and took cosmetology. It's what I wanted to do since I was little but was afraid to actually do it.
4. In high school, did you do anything to prepare yourself to become a cosmetologist?
My lifestyle in highschool had absolutely nothing to do with cosmetology. It was all about volleyball...literally...practice, games, tournaments, traveling 3 times a year, it was a fulltime job. The only thing I did which was actually unintentional was take art for several years. I tought be a lot about how to make flat surfaces become 3d looking which is part of what makeup is about with highlightuing and contouring, it's all the same thing, just on a different canvus using a different media.
Volleyball also helped me a lot to have the confidence to speak to my clients because I had to deal with the media which was a similar high pressure situation.
5. What characteristics do you need to have to be successful in this career?
You need to have a load of persistance. You always mess up before you get it right, walk before you crawl. Especially when you're a new stylist, you need to really have confidence in yourself. You have to fake it until you make it or no one will come back to see you again!
6. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love seeing people with a new style to themselves. It makes me feel like I'm getting the new style lol.
7. Are there any challenges you have with cosmetology?
Miscommunication is always hard. You need to make sure to say the samething a few different ways to make sure your on the same page. Sometime people think they know what's best....90% of the time they don't....you have to educate you client to see things from your side.

Journal #32
Describe a memorable learning experience
A memorable learning experience is when I learned that it is never good to lie. When I was in third grade, I found a pencil on the ground. I didn't know who's pencil it was and I asked everyone around me if it was theirs. The next day, while I was using "my" pencil, my friend asked me where I got it. I told her that my grandpa bought it for me but she knew I was lying and told on me to the teacher. While my teacher questioned me, I lied to her and and felt really bad. At night, I had a horrible sleep.
What is your vision of the ideal school?
My vision of the ideal school is a school that focuses mainly on the best way a child can learn. I believe that if a child is comfortable while learning, they will be willing to learn a lot more. I think different types of classes should be available for different learning types such as "hands-on, lectures, etc".
What do you need to learn? How would you best learn?
I think that school should have classes available for the learning of life skills and the way the "real world" works. In high school, students are very dependent on their parents so they should be able to learn what it is like without the help of their parents. I also think that it would be best learned when students can learn by experience.
